Established in August of 2016, the School of Art and Design offers courses of study in fourteen different areas in art, design and merchandising. Having merged together the departments of studio art and apparel merchandising and interior design, we are rooted in deep and rich heritage. The school's formation represents key elements of IU’s Bicentennial Strategic Plan—specifically its stated commitments to student success, building a prosperous and innovative Indiana, and moving toward a culture of building and making.

As part of the College of Arts and Sciences and we encourage creativity, critical thinking, and formal and technical innovation both in and out of the classroom. We broadly prepare students to contribute to our global society by using imagination and invention, and by addressing the complexities of the human condition. The school presents a unique opportunity for talented artists and designers and merchandisers to work together for the benefit of our entire university community, and beyond.

The hub of creativity at IUB

Spaces do not merely house the activities of the School of Art and Design—they are where ideas are envisioned and then disseminated to the world. The School is housed in six sites across the Bloomington campus including the newly renovated Kirkwood Hall, and in Columbus, Indiana at the IUCA+D. New and developing art studios, fabrication shops, and gallery spaces enable collaborative, cutting-edge work.
