Carrie Hott (Graphic Design) is developing How to Slow Internet, a network of small, solar-powered web servers built for specific regions rather than routed through centralized data centers. The fellowship supports a first server in Bloomington that becomes the working model for the rest of the network. The project presents a response to the scale of conventional data center construction.

Minjeong Kim (Merchandising) works on consumer autonomy in AI-assisted decision-making: How people retain agency and well-being within systems that make recommendations for them. Her approach draws on Value Sensitive Design, which treats human values as a design input. She is using the fellowship to build toward an NSF proposal on the subject of protecting that autonomy in interactions with generative AI.

JaeHoon Ma

JaeHoon Ma (Interior Design) is building an immersive virtual reality module for teaching lighting design in built environments. The module allows users to test how light behaves in a space before construction. Ma is using the fellowship year to measure the impact of immersive practice on student learning. The project is groundwork for a planned NSF proposal on VR- and AI-integrated instruction across architecture and interior design curricula.
