Fine Arts Fabrication Lab

The Fine Arts Fab Lab is a makerspace open for use by all Indiana University students, faculty, and staff. We are here to support you in your creative endeavors whether personal, research, or class related.

The Lab offers a wide array of services including laser cutting/engraving, vinyl cutting, and SLA and FDM 3D printing. Appointments to use the facilities may be scheduled at the link below, where you may also schedule a consultation to receive guidance with the equipment. Instructors interested in using Fab Lab equipment in tandem with class projects may schedule a class tour using the same link.

The Fab Lab requests that you schedule an appointment but will accommodate walk-ins if there is capacity.

• Laser Engraving: first hour no charge—each additional hour is $5.00
• FDM 3D Printing: Starting at $.10/gram
• SLA 3D Printing: Starting at $.35/gram
• Vinyl Cutting/Plotting: $.25 per linear inch ($3.00/ft)

The Fab Lab maintains and operates a range of digital fabrication machines. You are not required to have prior experience to make use of this equipment. A Fab Lab Technician will check your properly formatted files prior to any cutting or printing. If you require assistance formatting your files, please schedule a consultation. Note the Fab Lab does not offer custom design work.

Laser Cutting/Engraving

Currently the Fab Lab cannot provide materials for use with the laser cutters. Lists of approved and not approved materials are below. If you have questions about something not listed or require guidance on sourcing appropriate materials, please contact the Fab Lab directly or schedule a consultation.

Approved Materials:
Cast Acrylic, Cardboard, Cotton, Synthetic Felt, Linen, Yupo Paper, Matboard, Mylar, Paper, Polyester, Veneer Core Plywood

Not Approved Materials:
Extruded Acrylic, Mystery Materials, Adhesive Backed Materials, ABS, Carbon Fiber, Fiberglass, HDPE, MDF, Oily/Resinous Wood, Polycarbonate, Polystyrene, PVC, Rubber

3D Printing

Three Raise 3D Pro3 FDM printers

• 12" x 12" x 12" print capacity
• File formats: .STL, .OBJ

Three Raise 3D Pro3 Plus FDM printers 

• 12" x 12" x 24" print capacity
• File formats: .STL, .OBJ

The Fab Lab provides a wide range of color options in PLA and PETG filaments for FDM 3D printing. Absolutely no ABS, TPU, or nylon filaments are used in the Fab Lab. If you wish to provide your own filament, contact the Fab Lab directly or schedule a consultation to discuss materials and rates.

Four Form Labs Form 3 SLA resin 3D printers

• 5.7" × 5.7" × 7.3" print capacity
• File formats: .STL, .OBJ

The Fab Lab offers SLA printing in black, white, grey, clear, and castable wax. For proprietary reasons we are unable to print with individually supplied resin.

Vinyl Cutting

Graphtec Cutting Plotter FC9000-75

• Dimensions must be no wider than 22" in one direction
• File format: .AI

The Fab Lab hosts a wide variety of color options in removable vinyl including holographic finishes.
